A Target Specific Error Correction System
Abstract:
This paper proposes a target-specific error correction system using peer and teacher centered feedback during the writing process. The system can offer students an opportunity to develop second language fluency within the framework of their own written content.
Summary:
The topic of grammar correction in the writing process is one of importunate significance to writing instructors because they are constantly confronted with its requisite questions--what sort of correction key should be used and what limitations (if any) should be placed upon it? What type of comments should be given regarding content and how will those comments benefit fluency in writing and other skill areas?
Because a typical classroom contains numerous students with a wide range of second language abilities and distinctive learning styles, challenges to fluency can be breached when revisions follow both peer and teacher feedback on some, not all, errors.
This presentation explores authentic English-as-a-Second-Language student writing and the benefits gained when writing modes and topics are assigned which require some specifically targeted grammar and sentence structures.
The pedagogical implications of assigning topics which elicit a pattern of similarly constructed sentences with similar grammatical elements indicate that limited error feedback is superior to a system that uses correction guidelines that cover an expansive range of errors.
